Digital materiality (digimat) proposes a set of basic principles for how we understand the world through digital processes. Digital instruments may seem forbiddingly complex but they are based on simple mechanical principles which operate today on the subatomic scale, which creates challenges for conventional human epistemology. This short book sets out a methodical materialist understanding of digital technologies, where they come from, how they work, and what they do. This analysis starts from the classical materialism of the Greek physicist-philosophers, engages with the humanist and historical materialism of the flourishing of Enlightenment arts and sciences, and extrapolates from post-humanist new materialism informed by quantum physics. There can be no future without a present and that present is always, persistently material. Readers of this book must grapple with the mattering of digital material, especially the awe-inspiring epistemological schism between the infinitesimal, lightspeed reality of digital data and conventional, empirical human epistemologies which provide the vocabularies and cultural metaphors we must have recourse to in the attempt to discuss, communicate and decypher these phenomena. The obsolescent figure of anthropos (human being) will provide a central foil and subject for this challenge to understand our digital tools and their seemingly irrepressible reproduction. The future of humanity is at stake!

"Not of woman born, the Fortunate, the Unborn"-the terms designating those born by Caesarean section in medieval and Renaissance Europe were mysterious and ambiguous. Examining representations of Caesarean birth in legend and art and tracing its history in medical writing, Renate Blumenfeld-Kosinski addresses the web of religious, ethical, and cultural questions concerning abdominal delivery in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Not of Woman Born increases our understanding of the history of the medical profession, of medical iconography, and of ideas surrounding "unnatural" childbirth.Blumenfeld-Kosinski compares texts and visual images in order to trace the evolution of Caesarean birth as it was perceived by the main actors involved-pregnant women, medical practitioners, and artistic or literary interpreters. Bringing together medical treatises and texts as well as hitherto unexplored primary sources such as manuscript illuminations, she provides a fresh perspective on attitudes toward pregnancy and birth in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; the meaning and consequences of medieval medicine for women as both patients and practitioners, and the professionalization of medicine. She discusses writings on Caesarean birth from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, when Church Councils ordered midwives to perform the operation if a mother died during childbirth in order that the child might be baptized; to the fourteenth century, when the first medical text, Bernard of Gordon's Lilium medicinae, mentioned the operation; up to the gradual replacement of midwives by male surgeons in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Not of Woman Born offers the first close analysis of Frarnois Rousset's 1581 treatise on the operation as an example of sixteenth-century medical discourse. It also considers the ambiguous nature of Caesarean birth, drawing on accounts of such miraculous examples as the birth of the Antichrist. An appendix reviews the complex etymological history of the term "Caesarean section."Richly interdisciplinary, Not of Woman Born will enliven discussions of the controversial issues surrounding Caesarean delivery today. Medical, social, and cultural historians interested in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, historians, literary scholars, midwives, obstetricians, nurses, and others concerned with women's history will want to read it.

Bd.1: "Epigramme spielen innerhalb des literarischen Schaffens der Byzantiner eine wichtige Rolle. In nicht geringer Anzahl (mehr als 1000 Stück) sind diese auch heute noch inschriftlich erhalten, sei es auf Fresken, Mosaiken, Ikonen, auf so genannten Objekten der Kleinkunst und in Handschriften, in denen sie als Rahmen von Miniaturen fungieren oder Figurengedichte bilden. Der vorliegende erste Band der Reihe Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Überlieferung widmet sich Epigrammen auf Fresken und Mosaiken. Aus dem Untersuchungszeitraum (600 n. Chr.–1500 n. Chr.) sind mehr als 250 Epigramme auf Fresken und knapp 20 Epigramme auf Mosaiken überliefert. In einer ausführlichen Einleitung wird auf Fragen der Definition, der Geschichte und der äußeren Gestaltung byzantinischer Epigramme ebenso wie auf die Besonderheiten byzantinischer Epigramme auf Fresken und Mosaiken eingegangen. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit folgen die kritische Edition der Epigramme, deren deutsche Übersetzung und ein philologisch-sprachlicher sowie historisch-realienkundlicher Kommentar. Bd.1: Indices zu Epigrammanfängen, griechischen Wörtern, biblischen, antiken und byzantinischen Stellen und ein allgemeiner Index zu Orten und Personen runden den Band ab. Zur optischen Veranschaulichung sind fast alle behandelten Epigramme auch bildlich in einem Tafelteil dokumentiert. Viele der byzantinischen Epigramme, die mitunter von beträchtlicher Länge sein können, sind tatsächlich auch noch in situ erhalten. Der zweite Band der Reihe „Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Überlieferung“ ist byzantinischen Epigrammen auf Ikonen und Objekten der Kleinkunst gewidmet. Aus dem Untersuchungszeitraum (600 n. Chr. – 1500 n. Chr.) sind 67 Ikonen, 115 Metallobjekte, 34 Elfenbeine, 9 aus Holz gefertigte Objekte, 4 Steatitobjekte und 11 Textilien überliefert bzw. bekannt, die Verse als Inschriften tragen. Der vorliegende Band umfasst auch Addenda zu Band 1 (Byzantinische Epigramme auf Fresken und Mosaiken), insgesamt 33 Nummern. In der Einleitung wird auf die Spezifika der auf den erwähnten Objekten überlieferten Epigramme hingewiesen. Daneben wird auch auf Autoren, Metrik und Prosodie, Sprache, die Interaktion von Wort, Bild und Betrachter und paläographische Fragen eingegangen. Der Hauptteil der Arbeit ist der kritischen Edition der Epigramme, deren deutscher Übersetzung und dem philologisch-sprachlichen sowie historisch-realienkundlichen Kommentar der einzelnen Stücke gewidmet. Bd.3: Der Hauptteil der Arbeit ist der kritischen Edition der mehr als 300 Epigramme, deren deutscher Übersetzung und dem philologisch-sprachlichen sowie historisch-realienkundlichen Kommentar gewidmet; auch auf paläographische Fragen hinsichtlich der zeitlichen Einordnung der Epigramme wird eingegangen. Zur Veranschaulichung sind fast alle behandelten Epigramme auch bildlich in einem Tafelteil (in Farbe und Schwarzweiß) dokumentiert. Auch im vorliegenden dritten Band der Reihe wird auf die Omnipräsenz inschriftlicher Epigramme in Byzanz hingewiesen und die lang unterschätzte Bedeutung von Inschriften für die byzantinische Kultur unterstrichen."-- In Byzantium the epigram as a genre was highly appreciated. For the Greek, Dionysos was a very important god: for individuals as well as for the community as a whole. As there are only a few written sources dating from before the 5th Century BC the many images of Dionysos on Greek vases may well offer a genuine approach to the meaning given by the ancient viewer. This book explores the earliest images followed by those on small vases for private use, on mixing bowls of the symposion, on amphoras, on later drinking cups and on archaic sculptures. It gives an overview of Dionysian iconography of the 5th Century BC as well as an overall interpretation. The reader will learn why this god of vine and wine, of theatre and ecstasy, was so important for humans and why he played a key role in the life of the polis. Dionysos war für die Griechen ein Gott von zentraler Bedeutung, sowohl im Leben des Einzelnen wie der Gemeinschaft. Weil vor dem 5. Jahrhundert volumeChr. sehr wenige Schriftzeugnisse existieren, können uns die vielen Darstellungen des Dionysos auf griechischen Vasen am ehesten einen Zugang zu dem vermitteln, was der antike Mensch über ihn dachte. Analysiert werden zuerst die frühesten Bilder, dann jene auf kleinen individuell gebrauchten Vasen, auf grossen, beim Symposion verwendeten Mischgefässen, auf Amphoren, auf den späteren Trinkschalen und schliesslich in der archaischen Skulptur. Das Buch schliesst mit einem Ausblick auf die Bildgeschichte des Dionysos im 5. Jahrhundert volumeChr. und einer umfassenden Deutung. Diese Interpretation hilft zu verstehen, warum Dionysos, der Gott der Rebe und des Weins, des Theaters, der Ekstase, für den antiken Menschen so wichtig war und auch im öffentlichen Leben der klassischen Polis eine so grosse Rolle gespielt hat.
